Interim CFO in Stuttgart

Stuttgart is shaped by automotive suppliers, machine building and owner-managed SMEs: transformation, the house bank, succession and sales to financial investors. What that means for an interim CFO mandate – and how the appointment works on site.

In brief

Stuttgart mandates more often deal with upheaval: automotive suppliers converting their business to new drivetrains, machine builders with volatile order intake, family businesses facing succession. The most important reader of the numbers is often not a board but the house bank – and it mainly wants to see that the plan holds.

nugrow's network comprises around 500 freelancers across the German-speaking region. For Stuttgart mandates that means the appointment usually comes from the region. Presence is neither a bottleneck nor a cost factor that drives the decision.

What is different in Stuttgart

Suppliers in transition. Around 315,000 people work in the core of Baden-Württemberg's automotive cluster, at manufacturers and suppliers. The Strukturstudie BW 2023 expects 8 to 14 percent of these jobs to go by 2030, hitting component production and development hardest. For the finance lead that means a few large customers, annual price-downs, upfront spending on tooling and development that only flows back with the start of series production – and call-off volumes that change at short notice.

The house bank is the key reader. Many companies in the region are bank-financed and owner-managed. When things get tight, the bank demands a reliable cash forecast and a plan that holds for more than a quarter. How to spot the early warning signs is in liquidity squeeze: early warning signs.

Machine building counts in projects. Make-to-order production with down payments, long lead times and acceptance at the end shifts revenue and cash against each other. Order intake is the metric that warns first – long before the profit and loss statement does.

The region expects fewer jobs. The Strukturbericht Region Stuttgart 2025 expects employment to fall by 2.7 percent by 2035, driven mainly by mechanical and vehicle engineering. Restructuring is therefore often not an exception here but a planning scenario.

Succession and sale. According to KfW, around 109,000 German SMEs a year are aiming for a succession through the end of 2029, while around 114,000 a year plan to close down. Where a financial investor takes over, the company often needs reporting that works without the owner for the first time – and a data room that stands up to due diligence.

On-site presence

The appointment usually comes from Stuttgart or the surrounding area. Two to three presence days a week are therefore possible without travel setting the rhythm. nugrow itself is based in Bochum and works across the German-speaking region, on site and remotely.

How much presence makes sense depends on the trigger. In a restructuring, around bank meetings and in the first weeks of a mandate, presence counts, often more than in other mandates. Once reporting runs, fixed dates and presence at the key events are enough. That is settled before the start, not along the way.

Typical triggers

What it costs

Day rates follow role and trigger, not city. An interim CFO starts at €1,800 net per day; the other roles are on the pricing page. Expenses are stated in the proposal. In a restructuring the scope is often more than one to two days a week at first and falls once planning and bank reporting are running.

A note for international buyers

If your fund is acquiring a Swabian family business, expect strong engineering and thin reporting. Monthly numbers may exist only as the owner's view, and the house bank relationship often rests on personal trust rather than covenants. An interim finance lead who builds investor reporting in English while keeping the bank on side bridges the first months after closing.

Frequently asked questions

Does nugrow work on site in Stuttgart?

Yes. From a network of around 500 freelancers across the German-speaking region we usually place someone based in the Stuttgart region; two to three presence days a week are possible. nugrow has no office in Stuttgart; the company is based in Bochum.

What does the house bank expect from the finance function in a crisis?

A rolling 13-week cash forecast, a profit plan with traceable assumptions, clear measures with their effect in euros and reliable dates. Trust comes less from good numbers than from numbers that arrive as announced.

How does a family business prepare for a sale to a financial investor?

With monthly reporting that works without the owner, adjusted results for the last three years, a plan a buyer can recalculate and a data room that anticipates the standard due diligence questions. A year's lead time is realistic.

What does an interim CFO cost in Stuttgart?

Day rates follow the role, not the city: interim CFO from €1,800 net per day, head of finance €1,300, FP&A €1,150, controlling €1,050, bookkeeping €850. Expenses are stated in the proposal.

How quickly can a mandate start?

First suitable profiles within 24 hours, start a few days after the decision. The process is in briefing a mandate and comparing proposals.
