Interim CFO in the Ruhr Area: Essen, Dortmund, Duisburg

nugrow is based in Bochum. What shapes mandates in the Ruhr area: carve-outs from large groups, suppliers in structural change, restructurings at short notice – and short distances for on-site presence.

Updated on

The short answer

nugrow is based in Bochum, in the middle of the Ruhr area. Essen, Dortmund, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen and Oberhausen are day trips without an overnight stay, so two to three presence days a week are the norm. Mandates in the Ruhr area differ from the rest of North Rhine-Westphalia in three ways: carve-outs from large groups, suppliers in structural change and restructurings in which banks, shareholders and staff all need clarity at the same time.

The overview for the whole state including Düsseldorf and Cologne is in interim CFO in North Rhine-Westphalia. This article covers what is different in the Ruhr area.

What is different in the Ruhr area

Groups in transition. Essen and its surroundings host group headquarters from energy, steel and chemicals. When these groups sell or spin off divisions, independent companies emerge that need their own finance function overnight: bookkeeping, banking, payroll, reporting. Until that is in place, services run through transitional agreements with the former parent. More in carve-out: the finance function from day one.

Suppliers in structural change. Many mid-sized companies depend on energy, steel, chemicals or automotive. The transformation of these industries shifts orders, demands investment and strains liquidity. That puts investment plans, talks with several banks and grant applications on the table at once.

Restructuring at short notice. When orders fall away, there is little time. What counts then is a reliable 13-week cash flow forecast, a set of numbers the banks trust and a clear plan for the coming weeks. How that works is described in finance in a restructuring: the first six weeks.

Logistics, trade and services. Alongside industry, logistics around Duisburg, trade and healthcare shape the region. Here the work is more often about working capital, margins per order and moving to a new ERP system.

On-site presence

From Bochum the Ruhr cities are a short drive away. That makes regular presence plannable, including short-notice meetings with banks or shareholders. In restructurings and carve-outs, presence in the first weeks is the norm. Once reporting and planning run, fixed presence days and attendance at closings and bank meetings are enough.

Typical triggers in the Ruhr area

  • Carve-out from a group – own finance function from day one, transitional agreements, reporting for the new owner. See carve-out.
  • Restructuring – secure liquidity, lead bank talks, quantify measures. See restructuring.
  • Succession in the head of finance role – secure knowledge and hand over in an orderly way. See CFO handover and vacancy.
  • Bank meetings with several institutions – one set of numbers for all banks. See preparing for a German bank meeting.
  • Sale of the company – data room, planning and price mechanics. See exit preparation.

What it costs

Day rates do not differ by region but by role and trigger. The ranges are on the pricing page. Because distances in the Ruhr area are short, overnight stays and long journeys usually fall away.
