The short answer
nugrow is headquartered in Bochum. Düsseldorf and Cologne are about an hour away, Essen, Dortmund and Wuppertal considerably less. Added to that is a network of around 500 freelancers across the German-speaking region. For mandates in the Rhine-Ruhr area that means regular on-site presence is the norm, not the exception.
More important than distance, though, is what typically needs doing in the region. That is a different cut of work from Berlin or Munich.
What is different in the Rhine-Ruhr region
Family businesses and succession rather than venture capital. The finance function of many companies in North Rhine-Westphalia has grown over decades: an experienced head of finance and administration, a tax advisor, a spreadsheet landscape that works as long as the right person is there. When that person retires, it is not only a position that goes but the memory of the department. That is the most common trigger in the region – and one where the work is less about building than about translation: from grown practice into documented process.
The house-bank principle. Financing runs predominantly through savings banks (Sparkassen) and cooperative banks (Volksbanken), often relationships grown over decades with several institutions in parallel. That shapes the work: overdraft lines, guarantees, covenants and annual balance-sheet meetings instead of investor reporting. Whoever steps in here has to deliver bank documentation in the form the lending side expects – see preparing for a German bank meeting.
NRW.BANK and public programmes. The state's development bank is regularly involved in investment and growth financing, usually passed through the house bank. Applications and proof of use tie up capacity in the finance function – plannable, but not something done on the side.
Industry rather than software. Mechanical engineering, automotive supply, chemicals, logistics, construction. That brings topics that do not occur in a SaaS company: inventory valuation, work in progress, post-calculation, contribution margins per order, plant controlling. A finance function that only knows revenue and cost is not enough here.
On-site presence
From Bochum, Essen, Dortmund, Duisburg and Wuppertal are day trips without an overnight stay; Düsseldorf and Cologne are about an hour. Two to three days of presence a week are the norm within that radius – and exactly the frequency at which an interim mandate in a mid-cap works: the finance function is rarely documented well enough to be run purely remotely.
How much presence makes sense depends on the trigger. In a succession and in special situations, presence in the first weeks counts; once reporting runs, fixed dates and presence at closing and bank meetings are enough. That is settled before the start, not along the way.
Typical triggers in the region
- Succession in the head of finance role – secure the knowledge before the person leaves, then hand over in an orderly way. See CFO handover and vacancy.
- Bank meetings with several institutions – coordinated documentation, one set of numbers, no contradictions between the packages.
- Liquidity under a fluctuating order book – a 13-week cash flow forecast as a steering instrument, not a crisis response.
- Sale of the company to a strategic buyer or financial investor – data room, financial factbook, negotiation support.
- ERP change – the point at which grown processes have to be written down for the first time.
What it costs
Day rates do not differ by region but by role and trigger; the ranges are on the pricing page. Expenses are stated in the proposal – with short distances and an appointment from the region, overnight stays and long journeys fall away, which over half a year at two presence days a week is a noticeable line.
A note for readers outside Germany
For an international buyer or investor acquiring a company in the Ruhr area, the house-bank structure is the thing to understand first. Facilities are relationship-based, several banks often share one borrower, and the annual balance-sheet meeting is where terms are set. A finance lead who can produce the documentation these banks expect – in German, in the format the credit desk uses – keeps the facilities stable through a change of ownership.
Frequently asked questions
Does nugrow work on site in Düsseldorf and Cologne?
Yes. Both cities are about an hour from Bochum; two to three presence days a week are the norm. Outside North Rhine-Westphalia presence is not a bottleneck either – the network comprises around 500 freelancers across the German-speaking region, and the appointment usually comes from the company's own area.
What is typically different about mid-caps in North Rhine-Westphalia?
Financing runs through house banks rather than investors, steering is close to production and orders, and the finance function has often grown around one person over decades. That shifts the work from building to documentation and handover.
Do you know the NRW.BANK programmes?
The relevant investment and growth programmes generally run through the house bank. Application documents, use of funds and proofs belong built into the financial plan; the choice of programme is made by the house bank together with the company.
From what company size is an interim CFO worthwhile?
The trigger decides more than the size. From roughly €5 million in revenue, bank meetings, consolidation or succession reach a scale at which an experienced appointment pays back faster than it costs.
Does it work with less presence?
Yes, if the numbers are available digitally and the lines of coordination are short. In succession and restructuring mandates, though, presence in the first weeks is the difference between understanding and guessing.
