The short answer
There are three ways to fill a finance role on a fixed term: through an interim management provider, through a freelancer platform, or by engaging a known person directly. They differ less in the day rate than in who selects, who is the contract partner and who carries the risk if it does not work out.
- Provider: more expensive per day, but with pre-selection, a ready contract framework and cover if someone drops out. Fits leadership roles in a vacancy, a transaction or a crisis.
- Platform: wide choice and usually lower fees, but selection and contract review stay with the company. Fits clearly bounded specialist tasks.
- Direct: cheapest when you already know the person. Everything else – contract, status question, replacement – stays in-house.
For context: nugrow is itself a provider. That is why the article says plainly when one of the other routes fits better.
The comparison at a glance
| Interim provider | Freelancer platform | Direct engagement | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost and model | Day rate including the provider's uplift; industry figures quote 25 to 35 percent of the day rate | The person's day rate plus a platform fee (commission or subscription, paid by the client, the freelancer or both depending on the model) | Only the person's day rate, plus your own effort for search and contract |
| Time to start | First profiles often within days, start after selection and contract | Responses to a posting usually come quickly; screening and interviews take your own time | Immediate if the person is known and available; otherwise a search of your own |
| Selection and quality control | Pre-selection by the provider, references from earlier engagements | Profiles, ratings and your own interviews; vetting stays with the company | Your own experience with the person, or a referral |
| Contract and bogus self-employment | Provider's contract framework; the status question is reviewed jointly, responsibility stays with the client | Contract often directly with the person; status review stays with the company | Your own contract, your own status review |
| Liability and absence | Liability under the contract with the provider; cover in case of absence can be agreed | Liability under the contract with the person; replacement only through a new search | Liability under the contract with the person; no replacement |
| When it fits | Leadership role, time pressure, high cost of absence | Bounded specialist task, time for your own selection | Known person, clearly defined brief |
What the three routes cost
According to the DDIM market study 2026, the average day rate in German interim management is €1,317 – across all functions. For a CFO role the rate is usually higher. At nugrow, CFO support starts at €1,800 per day, excluding VAT; all roles are on the pricing page.
With a provider, the day rate includes an uplift. Industry figures quote 25 to 35 percent of the day rate; some providers name up to 40 percent. It pays for pre-selection, the contract framework and cover in case of absence. The key question in any proposal: is the quoted day rate the final price?
With a platform, the fee depends on the model. Some platforms charge the freelancer a commission, others charge the client a service fee, others run on subscriptions. Fees are usually lower than a provider uplift – but the work of selection and contracting moves in-house.
With direct engagement, only the day rate applies. It gets expensive when the search takes weeks or the contract later turns out to be open to challenge.
The point most often underestimated
Whoever engages a person directly or through a platform is usually the contract partner – and so carries the question of whether the work counts as employment for social-security purposes. If the German pension insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) later decides it does, the client pays the contributions retroactively, as a rule for up to four years. Certainty before the start comes from the status determination procedure under Section 7a of the German Social Code IV (SGB IV).
Going through a provider does not make the risk disappear, but a reviewed contract framework lowers it considerably. The criteria are in the glossary under bogus self-employment and service and work contracts, the difference to temporary staffing under employee leasing.
When nugrow is not the best choice
- You already know the right person and the brief is clearly bounded – direct engagement is usually cheaper.
- It is a short specialist task, such as a model or an analysis over a few days – a platform is often enough.
- The role should be filled permanently and there is time – executive search is the right route. More in Interim CFO or executive search.
- The role is outside finance – nugrow fills finance roles; for other functions a broader provider is the better address.
How nugrow works
nugrow proposes profiles from a network of around 500 finance freelancers, usually within 24 hours. The company makes the choice; the contract framework comes from nugrow. The contract always covers cover in case of absence, replacement in the opening window and a short notice period on both sides. Whether a service contract or employee leasing fits is settled before signing. More on the interim CFO page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an interim provider and a freelancer platform?
A provider pre-selects, supplies the contract framework and arranges cover if someone drops out. A platform brings companies and freelancers together; selection, contract review and replacement usually stay with the company.
How large is an interim provider's uplift?
Industry figures quote 25 to 35 percent of the day rate; some providers name up to 40 percent. What matters is whether the quoted day rate is the final price and what it includes.
Who carries the risk of bogus self-employment?
The client. If the German pension insurance finds that the work is employment, the client pays the contributions retroactively, as a rule for up to four years. That applies on all three routes; a reviewed contract lowers the risk.
When is a freelancer platform enough?
For clearly bounded specialist tasks with enough time for your own selection, such as a financial model or an analysis. For a leadership role in a vacancy, the cost of an absence is usually too high.
How fast can an interim CFO start through nugrow?
First suitable profiles are usually available within 24 hours. The engagement typically starts a few days after selection and contract.
